Nuggets (under construction)

I need a new name for this "feature" of the blog. One that's better than Mike's (Huey Lewis and the News). Suggestions?

Have you ever noticed how green the grass on Eddie's actually gets when the sun hits it just right? Oh springtime, you can't come soon enough.

Speaking of which, I've been woken up early in the morning (8am-ish) twice by stupid birds that won't stop tweeting (we're keep our window open because it's not -892305.8 degrees out anymore). They should be restricted to love scenes and Disney movies. Let me sleep damnit.

Baseball season is just around the corner! Yay!

I've played far too much Street Fighter 4 over the past week. Far too much.

I have 4 group projects due over the next few weeks. zomgstress.

I think when most people complain about how late they stayed up studying, they're really indirectly bragging.

I have to update that list of things that I get confused with one another. I've thought of at least 3 or 4 within the past few days (and by thought of I mean I heard one and thought of it's counterpart).

To be perfectly honest, the only thing that keeps me from really respecting the Jo-Bros is the fact that they're used primarily as a marketing scheme by Disney.

30 Rock has become funnier than The Office. There. I said it. It makes me sad.

Can you "catch" a person's yawn if you don't see the person yawn?

we're still yawning

Good day all,

There's been a fairly large lull around here lately, but today, with the rising sun, came the promise of good weather! It is a gorgeous day outside. Too bad the fields, etc, are all muddy from the massive rains we received yesterday. Oh well. Soon enough, friends, soon enough. That's all for today.

take it easy,
Michael

Guess who was on the NY Times front page?!

I'd like to share something from the front page of Wednesday's NY Times with you that, quite frankly, is too awesome for words (props to Jake for pointing it out):

Is this what the future holds for New Nick?

Important Things with Room 427

Mike's right. Huey Lewis and the News is infinitely times better than Nuggets. Damnit.

Anyway, I have breaking news(!). Mike and I have decided (some time ago, actually) that our little "Eddie's duo" would now like to be addressed as "Pancake Rebellion."

Now, I know that as fans, you're wondering how this changes anything. For starters, it gives you all the potential for fancy nicknames. You can be "Fancakes," "Rebels," say that you're a fan of "P.R.," "The Rebellion," or "The Pancake Cause." The possibilities are endless.

Of course, it's is not a one-way street (I'm not sure if that's the right phrase, but you'll see what I mean). We are always more than happy to welcome new members to our "project" (it's very important to note that we are not a band), so if bro'ing out on a daily basis during Spring sounds like you're cup of tea, let us know. We'll fax you an application.

Yeah. I definitely used that phrase wrong.

Superstition ain't the way,
Mai

huey lewis and the news

this is somewhat like nuggets, but with a better name (sorry Mai, but it's true)

1) New decemberists album is excellent, check it out.
2) job interview in long island today!
3) american idol was not on last night, it was bumped for the same reason John Cena was bumped from Jay Leno's show - Barack Obama, so you can't be that upset.
4) Ian is beating me on the Facebook march madness bracket thing. In fact, among my friends on facebook, he's in first place...what?

That is all for now.
Lunch has been cancelled due to lack of hustle. Deal with it.

I got chills, they're multiplyin'

Okay okay. This is ridiculous. I'm gonna list my #1 favorite album, skip most of the spiel, and finally move on. Since this is actually necessary now, here you go: Honorable Mentions, Album 5, Album 4, Album 3, Album 2, with the explanation of what's going on in the link to Album 5.

#1: Continuum

Short version: Shortly before college, I lost my desire for playing guitar. Early Freshman year, Continuum gave me motivation to play guitar again. No other album has had a more significant impact on my life than Continuum. Until that happens (if it does), it will remain my favorite and most influential album of all-time. If you want to read a more detailed version of how/why, read the "long version". If not, that should be enough for you to understand why it's my favorite album.

Long version: There was a 5-6 month period before Fordham during which I stopped playing guitar. I just got bored on not really progressing, and eventually I didn't feel motivated to play at all. Now, I had always, for whatever reason, been somewhat of a fan of John Mayer's music. A month or so into Freshman year, in the midst of an "illegally-download-as-many-full-albums-as-possible" phase, I downloaded Continuum. Probably one of the first albums in decades that I listened to the whole way through and enjoyed, I went about trying to learn a few songs off of the album. As it turns out, my boy J-May has a somewhat unique way of playing that I'd never seen before. To keep it short, trying to learn the songs got me interested in playing guitar again. For that reason alone, it is favorite album ever. The amount of times I've listened to it is obnoxious (to save what little face I have left, I will not divulge the number).

As for the album itself, it isn't perfect by any means. There are some sappy love songs that aren't my cup of tea, and the last few songs aren't anything spectacular (some songs fit both of these categories). However, I enjoy the album immensely nonetheless. "Gravity" is an incredible song, and the arrangement of "Stop This Train" into "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room"into an awesome cover of Hendrix's "Bold as Love" is my favorite part of any album, for now.

And so it is,
Mai

do you have any more gum? more gum. more gum.

Well hello there. How are you?
I don't really have much to talk about today since nothing has really happened since I've been back all of like 37 hours. So instead of boring you with nothing, i'll leave you with this.

So proud.

Also, I took a shower earlier but there is still a pair of socks on my bed. I can't tell if I'm wearing the "dirty" socks from before the shower or if the socks on my bed are the dirty ones. Yikes.

If you haven't heard of/read from a blog on this list, you probably wouldn't have an appreciation for said blog. Some of them barely have any posts. Some of them haven't been updated in weeks. I figured I'd put them up anyway. The list will be updated as necessary, if necessary.

Young Hov in the house,

What you want, baby I got it

The only sleep I've gotten in the past 24 hours is the 5 hours of sleep on my flight back to the Boogie Down, so I'll put off writing my #1 album until I stay focused on something for more than 10 seconds. In the meantime, here's some honorable mentions in no particular order (not necessarily favorites, but ones that have had a relatively significant musical impact on my life):

2001 (Dr. Dre)

Backstreet Boys (Backstreet Boys)

XO (Elliott Smith)

Michael Bublé (Michael Bublé)

No Strings Attached (*NSYNC)

Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan In Session (Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan)

I feel obligated to finish this thing before I can actually post about anything else, so let's do this.
Up until now: Album 5, Album 4, and Album 3. If, for whatever reason, you have no idea what's going on, "Album 5" has the low-down. Down-low. Either/or. Moving along.

#2: Rubber Soul

What is there to say about The Beatles that hasn't been said a thousand times over already? The greatest band to ever bless Mother Earth with music. That's not opinion; it's fact. Look it up. Even a person of my limited musical knowledge knows at least 5-10 Beatles songs. The first Beatles album I ever owned was 1, which was fine, but just went right along with my tendency to listen to an artist/band's singles. Shortly after my Coldplay revelation, I decided that I should use my newly found motivation to develop an actual opinion of The Beatles' work. Not just of how good they were/are, or even of what songs I liked, but of what albums stood out to me the most. After all, anybody who's anybody can tell you what their favorite Beatles album is (kidding). Luckily, I had the resources at hand to take on what would have otherwise been too daunting of a task for me to try. During the 2nd semester of Sophomore year, Mike gave me quite a few albums (Sgt. Pepper's, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Let It Be, and White Album) and from then on I was on my way.

By Spring Break, I had already given most of them a listen and felt proud, in a way, of the fact that I was actually dedicating myself to something and getting it done. The one album that I had not gotten a chance to listen to yet (if I didn't have the time to listen to an album the whole way through within a few hours, I would put it off until there was time) was Rubber Soul. One day, I needed to walk to the bank to do some stuff, so I decided that it would be a good time to put on the album as I walked over (it's a 10-minute walk or so to the bank from my house). As the opening track played, the first thing that went through my mind was "This is pretty catchy." Track after track went by, and I continued to think the same. While listening to the past albums, there had usually been at least one track a few songs into that album that I didn't care much for at first listen. However, each song on Rubber Soul seemed "catchy" enough for me to actually want to listen to the whole thing. As the album went on, I remember thinking something like, "I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but this could definitely be my best Beatles-listening experience so far" (but less wordy). I liked every single song on the album. Not just "Yeah, I don't mind listening to it," but actually "I have no idea which song to pick because they're all awesome."In fact, I walked slower and even lingered outside the bank (linger might be too creepy of a word to use here) for a while just to listen to more of the album.

Like A Rush of Blood to the Head to Parachutes, many people prefer the subsequent album Revolver to Rubber Soul. But once again, that isn't the case for me. The experience of realizing that I had finally found my "favorite Beatles album" and of being caught off-guard by how quickly every track pulled me into it with it's "catchiness" (no other word comes to mind and it would take too many words to clarify further) is something that will be engrained into my brain for the rest of time. Maybe also that every song but one is under 3 minutes (and the one is only 3:23), so it's just really easy to get into? That makes sense. Sort of. Besides, Revolver has "She Said She Said" on it. Bleh.

Almost done! Finally. Then I can go back to writing posts that don't take up 1/3rd of the front page.

Oh, also, after reading through this, none of it really makes that much sense or gets my point across the way I'd like it to, but it's too late now. I like Rubber Soul. /end

Don't you steal my sunshine,
Mai

Man, I'm tired of singin'

I am sick. Again. I was too lazy to think about what to write yesterday, but I'll see what I can come up with now. Ahem. Day 3. Album 3. Oh, and here's #s 5 and 4: Album 5, Album 4.

#3: Parachutes

As great as The Lion King Soundtrack and Thriller are, they weren't enough to keep me from falling back into my "listen to whatever is around me" phase. Without any specific knowledge as to what I was looking for in music, I went through a pop music phase, an oldies phase, a mainstream rap phase, an underground rap phase, and listened to whatever else my friends at the time were listening to up until college. It's not necessarily bad, but I found that when the time came for me to choose what music I wanted to listen to on my own, I didn't really know what to do.

Fast-forward to Sophomore year at Fordham. My dear friend Andy Shea has been my musical guru over the past year, showing me artists that I may like based on the little information I could tell him about my tastes. Weezer. Elliott Smith. Bright Eyes. Damien Rice. Brand New. Some I liked, some I didn't, but at the time I was willing to listen to anyone that would add to my ability of naming artists I was a fan of. One day, Andy found out (unsurprisingly, I'm sure) that I had never heard any of Coldplay's albums (namely Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head). Not wanting to throw too much at me at once, he just gave me Parachutes and asked me to devote enough time to give it a good listen. Like Thriller, Parachutes was one of those albums that made me smile and go, "Cool." However, unlike Thriller, it finally helped motivate me to find an artist that I liked and do more research about him/her/them. "Everything's Not Lost" showed me what a great ending track is supposed to sound like, and left me feeling so satisfied (insert double-entendre here) that it became my favorite song on the album (and my favorite Coldplay song. The Live 2003 version is unbelievable.) It isn't a perfect record by any means (I don't care much for "High Speed" or "We Never Change"), but it's one that I am literally always in the mood to listen to.

Many people prefer Rush of Blood over Parachutes, citing Rush of Blood as an album with more "substance" (even Chris Martin doesn't seem to like Parachutes very much). I guess I know what that means, but substance aside, if I enjoy an album, I enjoy an album. I think that should be a cardinal rule of music; if you like something, then you like it. That's it. I think people make that a lot more difficult than it has to be sometimes. Of course, that doesn't mean someone can't like Rush of Blood over Parachutes; Rush of Blood is a fantastic album as well, it just didn't impact me as much as Parachutes did. I don't even think I've explained very well how and how much it impacted me, aside from gushing about how much I love the album. Long story (really) short, it helped me give me solid ground to stand on in terms of defining my musical preferences, which is something that this and the final 2 albums all have in common.

Yeah!

Mahna mahna,
Mai

The Seaweed Is Always Greener in Somebody Else's Lake

Here we go. Day 2 of My (insert name-related pun here) Top 5 Album Countdown. If you're looking for the first post, which contains the synopsis of the countdown as well as my #5 album (and just happen to be too lazy to scroll down), here you go. Now onto album #4...

#4: Thriller

Before The Lion King, there was Free Willy. I'm sure the Free Willy soundtrack doesn't make many top 5 lists itself, but the album had on it a song called "Will You Be There" by some former motown prodigy named Michael Jackson. Now, these next few sentences may leave me wide open to hackneyed (thank you, SATs) and uncreative jokes, so please try to contain yourselves. Michael Jackson was the first artist I can remember declaring as my favorite artist to listen to, even if I only knew a few of his songs. After stumbling upon a few videos of him performing onstage, I eventually decided that Michael Jackson was the greatest performer of all time (even if he was only one of a handful of performers I had ever actually heard/seen/could recognize). In fact, it wasn't until years after I had decided that Michael Jackson was my favorite artist that I saw him moonwalk across the stage. That video clip still amazes me to this day.

As the Napster era rolled around, music became infinitely times easier to get a hold of, and as a result, my Michael Jackson discography expanded exponentially. All it took was the simple process of typing in "michael jackson" and hitting the search button. But one day, after discussing musical preferences with my best friend, he asked if I had ever heard the album Thriller. Of course, at that point I was still listening to singles and individual songs, and the only albums I owned were Astro Lounge by Smash Mouth and some *NSync and Britney Spears albums (that's a whole other story within itself), so the answer was no. Eventually, my friend burned me a copy of Thriller, and the rest is HIStory (that may be above some of your heads, and for that I apologize). All I can remember is listening to it non-stop after school and thinking, "If other albums are anything like this, then I've really been missing out." Even though the main reasons behind naming Michael Jackson as my favorite artist were pretty misinformed and short-sighted, Thriller gave me the argument I needed to finally back up my opinion. It's only 9 tracks, but I can't remember ever skipping through any of them.

However, what really sold me was happens 3 songs into the album. Tracks 4, 5, and 6 may very well be one of the greatest tracklist trios to have ever been recorded on any album. Thriller. Beat It. Billie Jean. A musical Holy Trinity. While Michael Jackson is no longer the sole owner of my "favorite artist" spot, I'll always remember how he and his music was able to make me stop and think, "Wow." Thriller is what helped me see beyond singles and individual tracks. It helped opened my mind up to the powerful effect that a few songs can have when put together in the right way. It's why I think I fall under the 5% of the population that would have zero qualms about going to Michael Jackson's final tour in Europe. It's why I was so shocked when some people didn't realize Rihanna and Kanye had sampled songs off the album. I'm telling you, he's innocent.

Stay classy,
Mai

You don’t have the technology OR the steady hands to pull off a procedure like that

What up thugz,

Well, well, well, It's been a while my good friends. Spring break is upon us! What wonderful news. Midterms are over, and now it's time to lay back, and relax. And by relax, I mean watch college basketball until my eyes decided to divorce my optic nerves/face. My nose would be very lonely.

In other news, I like that this blog has some substance now, maybe it can become one of those really famous blogs that people talk about. Maybe like one that tells people U2 will be playing on a college campus. There's no ceiling here people.

On another condiment related note, McDonald's has the tastiest sweet and sour sauce there is.

Peace, Love, and March Madness,
Michael

I Think I'm Getting the Black Lung, Pop

Some people are under the impression that my knowledge of music is somewhat extensive. This is false. I'm pretty sure I missed that entire phase where kids start to develop their own musical tastes. This phase did not happen for me until halfway through my Freshman year at Fordham and is still far from refined. Granted, I understand that many people change their musical opinion every day, and that it never really stops changing for good (unless you're a pretentious tool). However, what I'm saying is that 2 years ago, if you asked me what kind of music I liked, or what my favorite band was, or what some of my favorite albums were, there would be a brief pause followed by me churning out lie after lie about bands or albums that I knew I was supposed to like. To further that point, let me give you an example: before "I Will Follow You Into the Dark," I had only heard of the band Death Cab for Cutie and never any songs by them (or, consequently, Postal Service). As a result, because the word "death" was in their name, I had always assumed that they were a hardcore band. So yes, up until 2006, maybe 2007, I thought Ben Gibbard and Co. were hardcore rockers out to terrify the world. And no, that story was not misrepresented in any way to make it seem more ridiculous than it is.

Mundane rambling (aka "pulling a Pennacch") aside, the main point is that up until now, there are only a handful of albums that I think I could really say are my "favorites," and I think writing down and reasoning out why that's the case would be good for me (and the blog. It's about time someone added some (fake) substance around here). This was partly inspired by that Facebook nonsense about "20 most influential albums in your life," but 20 is far too many for me. I think I'd be able to list maybe 15 if I included albums that I'd just heard and liked. In any case, I have 5, and we'll do this from 5th-to-1st, "worst"-to-first, album-by-album, step-by-step, day-by-day. And yes, this is also because I believe my opinion is so important that you should all have to read about it. So here we go, starting with number 5...

#5: The Lion King Soundtrack

It's not a cop-out, I promise. Now, like many of my peers, I have a pretty vast library of Disney songs deep within the corridors of my mind. However, when it comes down to it, there really isn't any Disney album that can even compete with The Lion King's soundtrack (aside from the latest Jo-Bros endeavor, of course). Even if I had no knowledge of any other Disney songs (and hence no childhood), this would still make my list of top albums. Day after day, my mom would put the cassette in as she drove me to school, and day after day, I would go through every song on Side A, singing every word as loud as I could, then flip the tape over to Side B and repeat. It was one of the first times I ever really remember putting that much of myself into anything music-related.

Unfortunately, there is a story related to me singing a song from this album which, coupled with an 8th grade story about me singing with my friend's band at a Chinese retirement home, would scar me for life and leave me feeling as though I never wanted to sing in front of anybody ever again. I've begun the road to recovery over the past 2 years, but I'm still incredibly self-conscious about singing out loud. It's partly because of the fact that I don't have confidence in my singing ability, but mostly that, while I'd prefer it if people would (kindly) let me know if my singing was bothering them or not, most people wouldn't have the heart to tell me, so I'll never know if I'm wreaking havoc on anybody's eardrums. The fact that Mike is a modern-day Liberace doesn't help, either.

There it is. 1 down, 4 to go. Exciting.

Welcome to earth,
Mai

Nuggets: The Next Episode

A list of things that are connected at the hip in my mind:
1) Alaska/Canada
2) Celine Dion/Mariah Carey
3) Sally Field/Bonnie Hunt
4) Josh Hartnett/Mark Wahlberg

I'll update that list as I remember more of them.

Things that are currently bothersome to me:
1) When you install/update iTunes, you also have to install QuickTime.
2) Those GIANT, uncloseable ads for the iPod Touch that take up a third of the screen when you visit a website.
3) My iPod is breaking. In retrospect, letting those muggers have it would've saved me a few bucks out of my wallet.

I should've just named that list "Rotten Apples."

maybe i'll do the minimalist thing and type in mostly lower-caps. it's much more casual.

i'm flying home saturday!

Nah. That's Mike's thing. He's earned it.

Oh,

...something D-O-O Economics. Anyone? Voodoo Economics...

So, good thing it's not 1918. Because according to my This Day in History Calendar, the first cases of the deadly 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic (pandemic, really) were reported today.

Anyway, it was a pretty lazy day around here. I wish I had more to say, but unfortunately I don't. I guess the good news i do have, not to be braggadocios, is I've done very well on all of my midterms! Yay for me! Tomorrow I have to finish my midterm paper for my Literature of the Americas class. So that's that. After Thursday I am OFFICIALLY done with midterms! w-0-0-t.

Happy Trails,
Michael

Themed blog post!

So today, the episode where Jon & Kate Plus 8 gets two German Shepherd puppies was on TV. It. Was. Adorable. In fact, I think that if anyone were to create a show where the main concept was just 5-year-olds playing with puppies, it would be one of the best shows ever. Ever. Seriously though. Watching them play with the dogs made my heart feel like it was about to burst from all the joy that was filling it.

As if gushing about babies and puppies weren't manly enough, Room 427 has also started following American Idol. Actually, we started a few weeks ago, but I/we just never got around to blogging about it. Yeah. American Idol. Every Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8. It's what we turned to in an attempt to fill the cold, lonely nights.

Also, if you've got 8 minutes to spare, watch this video. In fact, you should try and make 8 spare minutes of your time just to watch it. It puts our (Mike and my) bro-sessions on Eddie's to shame. In any case, here it is: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1903319

nobody calls me chicken...

Oh hi, I didn't see you there,

First things first, I feel like the Kevin Costner movie The Untouchables is always on AMC. Literally always on. That's no metaphor people.

Anyway, spring break is coming up which I am very much looking forward to, even though i have a little work to do; not enough to complain about though nerdz. I'm hoping to see a few movies, Watchmen, that new Paul Rudd movie, and that older Paul Rudd movie. And whatever else is on TV. Maybe The Sixth Sense will be on like it was this weekend. I didn't catch the end. I have seen it, but not in 5 years or so.

Also, I've always slept with headphones on.

Stay Beautiful.

Lovingly,
Michael

Nuggets

Few things are more satisfying than knowing that a Monday crossword puzzle is waiting to be filled out (filled in?).

Remember that bumper sticker craze?

Room 427 is going invent the Universal Ink Cartridge and revolutionize the printing world (we're in talks with Billy Mays about a potential infomercial right now).

How are we supposed to miss you guys if we talk to you on an almost-daily basis?

There may be more non-abroaders who read this blog than there are abroaders who do.

When do you use toward and when do you used towards (forward/forwards, etc.)?

I need a haircut.

Mike and Jake have started going to bed with headphones on; I think it's because I snore too loudly.

Muah,
Mai

you make me feel like i can fly so high, Bono.

Good Day All,

I've been up since 5:30; and this time i didn't have to move people in! Instead i got to see U2 (and Diane Sawyer)!

I can't sing, but I've got soul.
like a mole, digging in a hole.
digging up my soul,
going down, excavation.

Love and Peace or Else,
Mikey

Just a quickie

Maybe later I/Mike will add a more detailed account, but for now let me just say this: U2 was incredible. Absolutely incredible.

Late Night with Room 427

3 things to look out for when arguing with Jake:

1) Red Herring arguments
2) Ad hominem arguments
3) Non sequiturs

Take this information and arm yourselves with knowledge. You can thank me later.

attention, attention

All classes have been cancelled due to inclement weather. Deal with it.

Michael out!

shine up the old brown shoes, put on a brand new shirt

Good Evening,

So it's snowing pretty hard here, everyone seems to think snow day. And no, not the really good movie. Maybe it will be like that tomorrow, but without Josh Peck. I doubt it though. I ain't buying into the hype. Plus i don't think there's an evil plow guy on campus. Fordham's snow removal team seems to be one guy walking around throwing salt.

So another weekend has come and passed. Nothing really new to account for. I'm sorry that I don't have any really interesting stories. I did have pancakes this weekend from IHOP. I don't usually eat breakfast food, but there's just something about IHOP. Delicious.

I think I'm about ready for spring break lolz. At least midterms are over and survived.

believe in your dreams,
Michael
